Boy Writes His Crush A Love Note. Now He’s In Trouble With Police Over It
A fourth-grader in Florida was threatened with sexual harassment charges from his school principal after writing a sweet love note to his crush in class.
The mother of the boy, who asked to remain unnamed, told WFTS that she got a call from administrators at the Hillsborough elementary school where her son attends after he penned a love letter to a girl he liked.
“How she wears the same uniform and how her eyes sparkled like diamonds,” his mom said of the note.
But after his fellow classmates found out what he had written, the others kids started teasing the fourth-grader, joking that he wanted to see his crush naked.
“That’s when the principal proceeded to tell me that it wasn’t appropriate that he was writing the note and that if he writes another note, they are going to file sexual harassment charges on my 9-year-old,” the mom said.
“He’s 9,” she added. “What little kid doesn’t write love notes?”
The Hillsborough school district, however, claims the little boy wrote several of these love notes to his crush, all of which were unwanted and rejected.
“It may be something he thought was very sweet and innocent,” Dr. Valerie McClain, a licensed psychologist in Tampa, told WFTS. “What needs to happen is education needs to be provided about how to relate to this young girl or how to stay away from talking to her, if that’s the goal.”
For now, Hillsborough teachers have been asked to discourage students from passing notes of any kind at school.
Still, the fourth-grader’s mother insists her son did nothing wrong.
“My 9-year-old doesn’t even know what sexual harassment means,” she said.
